Kissito Healthcare names Doctor of Physical Therapy as “Caregiver of the Year” Award at annual banquet

Roanoke, VA. – Joseph Barton, Doctor of Physical Therapy, has been named as the “Caregiver of the Year” by Kissito Healthcare during their annual awards ceremony. Barton has worked with two Kissito Healthcare center, Bland Nursing & Rehab, and the Brian Center Fincastle during his time with Kissito Healthcare.

Barton started with Kissito as a student and joined the team officially in 2019. In that time, he has served residents in six of seven Kissito centers completing in-person and telehealth evaluations, supervising physical therapy assistants, and performing treatment for residents.

He is described by coworkers as always ready to help any location with a moment’s notice and his patients are motivated by his gentle, encouragement and genuine excitement for their success.

“He has an open mind and is always willing to try something out of the box and shows great clinical judgement, reasoning, a dedicated selfless therapist, and is a huge team player,” Shelby Houston, PTA, Director of Rehabilitation for the Brian Center Fincastle.

One example of how Barton goes above and beyond for his residents is the story of a resident who hasn’t sat on the edge of bed in years, and Barton was the only therapist who was willing to try to encourage him to reach this goal. This resident was able to complete the task which was very emotional and made the resident feel empowered.

He is a kind and gentle soul always educating staff and advocating for the residents. “He is the man” as a resident responded when asked to describe Joe Barton.

“To know Joseph Barton is to love him! He’s a calm, cool, and collected kind of guy. He loves helping people get back on their feet! He makes physical therapy seem so easy just by talking to you about it. He’s your instructor and cheerleader all at the same time! He makes physical therapy FUN for his patients,” said resident Latasha Burchette at the Brian Center Fincastle.
